For Meredith Clark, Physical Therapist Assistant, caring for patients at Girard Medical Center means caring for the same community that helped shape who she is.

A Girard native, Meredith has spent 16 years at GMC, helping patients regain strength, improve mobility, reduce pain, and work toward the goals that matter most in their everyday lives.

“In a small town, the care we provide reaches far beyond the walls of the hospital,” Meredith shared. “Patients aren’t just a name on the schedule—they are neighbors, friends, and familiar faces we see around town.”

Helping Patients Get Back to What Matters

Girard Medical Center’s Physical Therapy Department provides care to both inpatient and outpatient patients, supporting people of different ages and abilities as they work toward greater mobility, independence, and quality of life.

For Meredith, a typical day may begin by working with patients in the hospital before transitioning to outpatient appointments. Throughout the day, she moves between patients with different needs, conditions, and goals.

No matter what brings someone to Physical Therapy, the goal remains the same: helping patients maintain their quality of life and get back to doing the things that are important to them.

That can mean helping someone regain strength and independence, rehabilitating a teenager after a sports injury, or helping a patient reduce pain so they can return to work or enjoy their favorite activities.

Sometimes, progress is measured by meaningful everyday moments.

“Working in this setting allows me to see the direct impact physical therapy has on patients’ daily lives,” Meredith said. “It might be helping someone regain the ability to attend their children’s or grandchildren’s ball games and giving them the confidence to climb the steps in the bleachers again.”

A Team Willing to Go Above and Beyond

After 16 years at GMC, one of Meredith’s favorite parts of her job remains the people she works alongside.

“I have outstanding coworkers,” she said. “They are able to think outside the box to help patients meet their goals.”

Meredith describes the Physical Therapy team as a group of knowledgeable, skilled, and caring professionals who are willing to go above and beyond for their patients. By listening to what each patient wants to accomplish and finding creative ways to help them get there, the team makes therapy personal.

For Meredith, that individualized approach is especially important in a rural community.

“Being able to support their health, mobility, and independence feels like an opportunity to give back to the community,” she said.

Rooted in Girard

Meredith’s roots in Girard run deep. She grew up here, works here, and continues to spend much of her time supporting the activities and people that make the community home.

Outside of GMC, Meredith enjoys spending time with her family and can often be found at a local sporting event. She coaches her daughter Annie’s teams and enjoys watching Gannon and Easton compete in football and javelin.

It’s no surprise, then, that some of her favorite local places are Girard’s ball fields, football field, and newly renovated track and throwing field.

“Our community is so fortunate to have these facilities for the kids to compete,” she shared.

When she isn’t at a sporting event, Meredith also enjoys trying new recipes. Although she describes herself as more introverted, she jokes that her kids’ activities keep her social.

Her connection to GMC extends beyond her work in Physical Therapy, too. One of her favorite memories is volunteering alongside coworkers to prepare meals at the Ronald McDonald House each month—an experience that reflected the same spirit of service she values in her work today.

It Doesn't Cost Anything to Be Kind

After more than a decade and a half of serving patients at Girard Medical Center, Meredith’s approach can be summed up by a simple motto:

“It doesn’t cost anything to be kind.”

It’s a philosophy that fits naturally with the work she and her fellow Physical Therapy team members do each day—meeting patients where they are, encouraging them through challenges, celebrating their progress, and helping them return to the people, places, and activities they love.

At Girard Medical Center, Physical Therapy is about more than movement. It’s about helping our neighbors maintain their independence, return to the activities they enjoy, and continue living the lives that matter to them.
