Girard Medical Center has a proud history rooted in community care, dating back to 1916 when local leaders recognized the need for accessible healthcare in Girard. After early efforts to establish a hospital, a new facility began serving the community in 1918, laying the foundation for decades of growth. In 1969, Girard Medical Center officially opened its doors as a modern hospital, supported by a community-backed bond and a donated building site.
Over the years, the organization has continued to evolve to meet the needs of Southeast Kansas, with key expansions including the addition of an ICU/CCU unit in 1983, major renovations in 1992, and significant growth in 2008 with a large-scale construction project that doubled the size of the facility. The new, expanded hospital opened in 2010, featuring updated patient rooms, enhanced care areas, and advanced surgical capabilities.
Today, Girard Medical Center continues to build on this legacy by providing comprehensive healthcare services both on its main campus and through multiple family practice clinics across Crawford and Bourbon County. With a commitment to compassionate care and continuous improvement, we remain dedicated to supporting the health and well-being of the communities we serve.
Key Milestones Include:
- 1918 - Earliest hospital in Girard lays the foundation for more than a century of service to the community
- 1969 - Girard Medical Center opens as a modern health care facility
